We Help Youth in Crisis.

The Bridge for Youth deeply appreciates the expertise and enthusiasm of volunteers to further our mission and support the needs of our organization. Volunteers play a crucial role at The Bridge and we are thankful for their dedication and commitment. Volunteers and interns contribute over 10,000 hours of service to help youth in crisis. See below for more information about how you or your group can volunteer at The Bridge.

Volunteer at The Bridge for Youth:

Step 1: Complete an Online Volunteer Interests Application

If you are not a current volunteer, you must complete an online application before volunteering.

Step 2:   Complete Pre-screen (Personal Phone Contact)

Within five business days, volunteers will receive personal communication from staff at The Bridge for Youth. This phone call is used to get to know the volunteer, assess their interests and explain more about The Bridge, the services provided, and ways to engage with the agency as a volunteer.

Step 3: Schedule Orientation

Once information is gathered during the personal phone contact, a volunteer orientation is scheduled. Group orientations happen the same day as the volunteer project.

Orientation is required for all volunteers. Indirect volunteers must attend one general orientation held the 3rd Wednesday of every month. This 1.5 hour orientation provides an overview of the vital information needed in order to start volunteering at The Bridge for Youth.

Volunteer working with youth (direct) are required to participate in more intensive training. This happens 3-4 times per year. Schedule to be announced soon.

Step 4: Complete Orientation and Schedule to Volunteer

Once orientation is complete. You can begin volunteering at The Bridge for Youth (pending all necessary paperwork is submitted.)

Please note: Under licensing compliance, any individual at The Bridge who will have unsupervised time with youth in program is required to be aged 21+ and must complete a background check through NetStudy 2.0 (The Bridge for Youth covers background check fees). In addition, prospective volunteers must be fingerprinted at their own expense ($9.10 as of Aug. 30, 2019).

Volunteer Opportunities at The Bridge for Youth

Marlene’s Place

The Bridge for Youth’s newest program opened in April 2019!  Marlene’s Place serves five pregnant or parenting homeless youth and their children in this transitional living program.  Individual and group volunteers will be needed for meal preparation and service, child care, small events (such as birthdays, Mom’s Day Out), and donation drives.  Must be age 21 or older.  Volunteer opportunity details and training are currently in the works.  To be placed on a list for further information, please contact Sagal Hussein at 612-230-6687 or email her at s.hussein@bridgeforyouth.org

Youth Response

The Bridge serves minors (youth 10-17) who come to us in crisis. The safety, anonymity, and confidentiality of our clients and their families is critical, so we have limited opportunities for volunteers to work directly with clients.

Volunteers assist in responding to phone calls and incoming texts from youth in crisis.  This is an opportunity to directly assist young people in need with issues like bullying, family conflict, violence, abuse, gender identity issues, homelessness, anxiety, depression, and sexual and gender identity issues.  Full training and volunteer supervision provided.  Must commit to a 4-hour shift at least weekly or bi-weekly.  Must be aged 21 or older.  Contact Sagal Hussein at 612-230-6687 or email her at s.hussein@bridgeforyouth.org

Fundraising & Development

The Bridge raises nearly 50% of its budget through corporate and individual contributions. Help us raise the funds needed to support our programs:

Organize a Fundraising Event (garage sale, bowling for The Bridge, car wash for The Bridge).  Contact Tim at t.mercure@bridgeforyouth.org or 612-230-6685 for materials about The Bridge for your event.

Organize a Donation Drive at your company, church, or in your neighborhood (backpacks for youth, socks for youth, jeans for teens). Contact Sagal at s.hussein@bridgeforyouth.org or 612-230-6687 for up-to-date information about the items that are most urgently needed.  Check out our Target Charity Registry for ideas as well!
